ELC seminars are intended for members of staff and MA and PhD students at Departments of English and, more generally, for anyone interested in linguistics.
Brief profile of the invited speakers:
ELENA SEOANE
Prof. Elena Seoane obtained her MA in English Language and Literature at the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1990. In 1992 she started work as a researcher at the University of Santiago and was awarded a FPU research grant from the Spanish Ministry for Education and Science. She then worked as Assistant lecturer at the University of A Coruña (1993-1994) and at the University of Santiago (1994-1999). In 1996, Elena Seoane received her PhD in English Linguistics, supervised by Teresa Fanego. She held a permanent position as Senior Lecturer at the University of Santiago from 1999 until 2010 when she moved to the University of Vigo. In 2013, she passed the ‘habilitación’ exam qualifying her for promotion to a chair in English Linguistics. She has given invited talks and plenary lectures in Aachen, Bamberg, Freiburg (FRIAS), Helsinki, Northwestern University, Osnabrück, Paderborn, Palma de Mallorca, Tampere, Oviedo (3rd Asyras Conference) and Brno (14th ESSE Conference). She was the Principal Investigator of the projects «Morphosyntactic variation in World Englishes and compilation of resources for its study (the Gibraltar component of the International Corpus of English, ICE-GBR) (ViEW)” and «A register approach to morphosyntactic variation in World Englishes and compilation of resources for its study (The International Corpus of English – Gibraltar) (Re-ViEW)”.

CRISTINA SUÁREZ GÓMEZ
Cristina Suárez-Gómez obtained her MA in English Language and Literature at the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1997. She also holds the degree of Master in Linguistics from the University of York (2003). In October 2000 she started work as a researcher at the University of Santiago; from October 2001 to September 2002 she stayed at the Department of Language and Linguistic Science of the University of York, and from August 2003 to July 2004 she worked as a Teaching Associate at the Department of Spanish of Brown University, USA. She has held visiting positions at the Universities of Regensburg, Santiago, Vigo and York. In 2004 Cristina received her PhD in English Linguistics (European Doctorate) from the University of Santiago and she obtained a position as Lecturer in English at the Department of Spanish and Modern and Classical Languages of the University of the Balearic Islands. In October 2010 she was promoted to a position as tenured Senior Lecturer; in November 2021 she passed the national examination (‘acreditación’) qualifying her for promotion to a chair in English Language and Linguistics. She was the Principal Investigator of the project “Morphosyntactic variation in New Englishes”, under funding from the Spanish Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness (grant FFI2011-26693-C02-02). This project was carried out at the University of the Balearic Islands, in coordination with the Santiago-based project FFI2011-26693-C02-01 (Principal Investigator: María José López-Couso). Together with Lucía Loureiro-Porto, she is the PI of a project on morphosyntactic variation in World Englishes, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (PID2020-117030GB-I00, 2021-2024).
