The Master in Advanced English Studies and its Applications – iMAES is affiliated to the Faculty of Philology and the Department of English and German at the University of Santiago de Compostela. It is organised jointly with the Faculty of Philology and the Department of English at the University of A Coruña, and the Faculty of Philology and Translation and the Department of English, French and German at the University of Vigo. (Downloadable Poster) All three universities are located in Galicia (Northwestern Spain), within easy driving distance of one another. The University of Santiago de Compostela was founded in 1495; in ARWU 2022 (Shanghai Ranking) it was ranked among the world’s top 500 universities and among the world’s top 250 universities in the field English Language and Literature. Likewise, it was ranked among the top 10 universities in Spain.
iMAES was established in September 2013 (MECD RUCT 4314355). In July 2017, following a highly rigorous and exhaustive process, it earned renewed accreditation from the Agency for Quality Assurance in the Galician University System and the Spanish Ministry of Education for a new four-year term. iMAES consists of 60 ECTS, which can be completed in one year (full time) or two years (part time). Classes are held at each of the three organising universities, so that students can choose the location and schedule that best suit their needs and interests. All courses are taught entirely in English. With the exception of the subjetcs ‘Linguistic Models and their Application to English’ and ‘Models of Literary and Cultural Interpretation in English-Speaking Countries’, of 4.5 ECTS each, the rest of the courses (3 ECTS) combine 7 hours of distance learning with 14 hours of classroom instruction. There is also a Master’s thesis (12 ECTS), and a practicum unit (6 ECTS), which affords students a unique opportunity to carry out external practical work in companies and institutions, as a means of acquiring professional skills and experience.
ACADEMIC PROSPECTS:
iMAES constitutes the prerequisite coursework for admission to any PhD programme in English Studies, including IDAES, the inter-university doctoral programme jointly organised by the Universities of Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña and Vigo. More specifically, the Master provides the necessary orientation for research and teaching at a university level in the various fields of specialisation of its teaching staff, namely: language variation and change (principally from the perspective of Cognitive Grammar and Construction Grammar); corpus linguistics; sociolinguistics; psycholinguistics and language processing; pragmatics and discourse analysis; contrastive studies; English for Specific Purposes; language teaching and acquisition; Anglophone literatures and cultures; studies on literature and identity; gender studies; ecocriticism; literary and film studies and literary translation.
PROFESSIONAL PROSPECTS:
The Master constitutes an excellent complementary course of study for those entering secondary school teaching, and for various other professional profiles in the areas of translation, cultural mediation and management, tourism, publishing, literary and film criticism, journalism and advertising.
OUTCOME INDICATORS:
Since the Degree’s initiation in 2013-2014, it has consistently received high satisfaction rates (e.g. average over 4 for ‘teaching and learning’ and ‘academic staff’, on a scale of 1 to 5).
