En cada unha das tres liñas de investigación, discutiranse propostas teóricas e empíricas contemporáneas. As tres áreas son centrais no campo da adquisición de linguas e comparten dúas perspectivas en común. Primeiro, que a adquisición de lingua está profundamente influida pola diversidade de anhelos, habilidades, e estilos que albergan diferentes adultos cando se embarcan na tarefa de aprender unha lingua estranxeira.
